Retrieving your lost passwordis easily achieved by accessing the console port. Password retrieval procedures will differ significantly among mostCisco products. Furthermore, the retrieval process changed significantlybecause of IOS upgrades. The goal of this post is to direct basic instructions that will allow the majority of legacy Ciscodevices users to accomplish this task. Through following these instructions, youwill be able to retrieve your lost password from most Cisco routers. Please note that theseinstructions are designed to assist those using the 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000,7000, and IGS hardware.

Step 1 - Check you Configuration Register

The first step in retrieving your password is to establish a connection betweena terminal, or a PC operating terminal emulation software, and the console porton your Cisco router. The terminal settings should be 9600 bps with eight databits. Select no parity, and choose two stop bits. Be aware that some routers,like the AccessPro Card, require one rather than two stop bits. Next, powercycle your Cisco router. Before 60 seconds have elapsed from the time that youpower on the router, be sure to send a BREAK signal. This should be done eitherfrom the terminal or from the software being used.

Hyperterminal users, key in [CTRL-PAUSE]
The boot monitor prompt used for the 3800 ERM is ‘3800-ERM (boot)’. Through this prompt, the privileged mode can be entered immediately from this point. When this is done, the prompt will then revert to ‘3800-ERM(boot)#’.

If the signal from the cable being used to connect with the router is adequate,and the command is entered correctly, a ‘>’ prompt will appear on thescreen. Do not mistake this for an IOS prompt. It is a prompt for the ROMmonitor.

Carefully examine the configuration’s register by entering ‘e/s 2000002’.Record the listed value that identifies the register. Key in ‘Q’ to quitviewing the register and re-access the prompt for the ROM monitor.

You may be required to enter the commands‘confreg’ or ‘config-register’ to access this register. Users see severalquestions. Only the following questions should be answered with yes:

Do you wish to change the configuration?
Ignore system config info?
Change boot characteristics?

Answer no to every other question. When you reach the prompt asking you to‘enter to boot’, key in ‘2’ and hit ENTER. Respond negatively when askedwhether you wish to change the configuration at this point. To set theconfiguration register, key in ‘o/r0x42’. This command will order your routerto reboot from flash ROMs. If you receive a message that these are corrupted,type in ‘o/r0x41’, which orders the router to boot from the boot ROMs.

To alter the configuration register in certain early routers, including theCGS, MGS, AGS, AGS+, and early 7000 series routers, you must move the hardwarejumpers. Sometimes, these are on the CSC processor card, and users must changethem by moving jumper eight to position fifteen.
DIP switches are employed by earlier versions of the IGS routers to set values in the configuration register. Those using this model should flip switches 0 through 3 OFF (the UP position), while switching 7 ON (the DOWN position).

Step 2 - How to Modify the Configuration

Power cycle your router.
Respond negatively to all questions concerning setup.
When you reach the ‘Router >‘ prompt, key in ‘enable’. This command will permit you to access privileged mode. The corresponding ‘Router#’ prompt will appear.
Enter the command ‘show startup-config’. This permits you to see the file containing device configurations.
Locate the # onfig’. This permits you to see the file containing device configurations. Locate the password. If it is not encoded, write it down and reboot your router. If it is encoded, continuing following the directions below.
Enter the command ‘configure memory’. This permits you to copy the router’s configuration file from NVRAM over to RAM. Note that prior to starting this task, the router’s configuration file will be empty. After completing this task, it will be the same configuration that was originally stored in NVRAM by the router’s administrator.
Key in the following command to access configuration mode: ‘configure terminal’.
Determine which of the following security options you wish to use:

Set a login password by entering the command ‘password’. If you do not want to use a password, type in ‘no password’.
Set an enable password by entering the command ‘enable password’. If you do not want to use an enabled password, type in ‘no enable password’.
Set a secret password by entering the command ‘enable secret’. If you do not want to use a secret password, type in ‘no enable secret’.
If you prefer to use a password for the console port, key in ‘line 0’. Then key in ‘password’. If you do not want to have a password on the console port, key in ‘line 0’, followed by ‘no password’.

Be aware that if you change any of these password settings, you will quiteprobably irritate any prior router administrator. It is not necessary to changeany of the passwords unless they are encoded. If, however, they were encoded,you must either change or decode them. To read further about the procedure fordecoding passwords, read the following FAQ on How do I decrypt Ciscopasswords?.
* By keying in [CTRL-Z], you can exit the configuration mode. Enter the command‘copy running-config startup config’, which will copy the edited configurationinto the startup-config. Entering this command allows you to save your changesto the router’s configuration.

Step 3 - Finish the Task

Power cycle your router.

Reset the configuration register to its previous value. To do this, key in‘configure terminal’. This allows you to enter the necessary mode. Set theregister value by typing ‘config-register’, and then enter the value that youpreviously recorded. If the value was not previously available, using a defaultsetting of 0x2102 is nearly always sufficient. (This value is the defaultsetting for most Cisco routers.)

1. If you are using the Router Switch Processor (RSP4), use the value 0x0101instead.
2. If any jumpers were moved, or DIP switches were set during this process,return them to their original settings.

With some routers, you may have to erase the entire configuration registry toretrieve your lost password. For example, users of the Catalyst 2820 ATM arerequired to access the Port Configuration Menu, and then rese registry valuesto factory default settings. The 500-CS model will revert to factory defualt very easily. Justdepress the reset button located atop the router’s case simultaneously withturning on the device. If you are using the Catalyst 3000, you will need todepress the SysReq button, which is located on the router’s back panel, for aperiod of five seconds. After you release the button, choose the menu option‘Clear Non-Volatile RAM’.

At the slightest hint of intrusion they would instantly irradiate any threat to your network. Not by a automated piece of software, but a fully sophisticated robotic system equipped with a plasma cannon and multiple physical sensory detection abilities.

At the very least, you should not have a rat problem at the end of the first 7 days once activated. I should warn you, there have been times where the owner tries to return the unit, not the Cisco 6509, and he to experiences what one may call "technical difficulties". This could easily be conceived as some form of a intentional approach for worker's compensation. I'm not saying this is always the case but is typical.

I do not recommend sending in this network protection bot on any equipment valued over $5,000. Anything below this amount is highly enjoyable to watch in the event of a misfire or malfunction. As example, you recently purchased a Juniper SRX220H router with a antivirus, web filter, IDP, or antispam license. You are probably wondering how to install your newly purchased license to your SRX220 device. This process may be used for any Juniper SRX series device. To simply the process, please follow steps 1 to 3 carefully.

First, activate your subscription license by entering the authorization code and chassis serial number into the Subscription Registration system. The authorization code will be 16 digits and sent to the email address provided by the purchase order. It is also recommended that you register your device for faster support in the future.

For your convenience, follow these steps to register your product:
- Log into the Juniper Networks Subscription System
- Select Subscription Registration Tool
- Enter the device serial number and authorization code
- Click register product
- Finally, you will see a confirmation page that notifies you of successful registration

Next, install the license on the SRX by a manual or automatic method.

For Automatic Installation

Confirm the SRX appliance has connectivity to the Internet and DNS configured. Then run the following command to request the license from the License Management Server and install it:

For Manual Installation

Licenses can also be loaded manually via JWeb, NSM, or using the CLI. The CLI command is as follows:

Ensure the license is installed using the command:

Juniper SRX100B Factory Reset Instructions

There are currently three ways you can reset your Juniper SRX100B back to the original factory configuration. Not only do these steps work forthe device listed, they also work for any SRX branch series router. The methods consist of using the load factory-default command, using the reset config button, and using the root password recovery process.

Using the Load Factory-Default Command
If you are still able to log in to the SRX100B with the CLI, you can use the load factory-default command to return the security appliance to its original factory default configuration. The load factory-default command loads and commits the factory configuration, but using this command does not delete other configuration files on the device.

Type the load factory-default command.
root@host# load factory-default

Use the set system root-authentication plain-text-password command to set a new root password for the device.
root@host# set system root-authentication plain-text-password

Enter the root password, and enter it one more time for confirmation.
New password:
Retype new password:

Use the commit and-quit command to commit the configuration and exit from configuration mode if the configuration contains no errors and the commit succeeds.
root@host# commit and-quit

After the commit, the factory default configuration is the running configuration.

Using the Reset Config Button
The reset config button may only be found on the SRX650, SRX240, SRX210 and SRX100.

You can use the Reset Config button on the front panel of the SRX Series product to reset your hardware to its factory default configuration. If you use the Reset Config button to reset the device to its factory default configuration, all the configuration files, including the backup configuration and rescue configurations, are deleted. Otherwise, this means they are gone forever.

To reset the your Juniper device to its factory default configuration, press and hold the Reset Config button on the front panel of the SRX Series device for at least 15 seconds, until the Status LED glows amber.

Using the Root Password Recovery Process
If you can no longer log in to your SRX device, you can use the root password recovery process to reset the device to its factory default configuration. You must have console access to use the password recovery process. Please follow these steps from 1 to 20 carefully.

Power off the router by pressing the power button on the front panel.
Turn off the power to the management device, such as a laptop or desktop computer, that you want to use to access the CLI.
Plug one end of the Ethernet rollover cable supplied with the router into the RJ-45–to–DB-9 serial port adapter supplied with the router.
Plug the RJ-45–to–DB-9 serial port adapter into the serial port on the management device.
Connect the other end of the Ethernet rollover cable to the console port on the router.
Turn on the power to the management device.
On the management device, start your asynchronous terminal emulation application (such as Microsoft Windows Hyperterminal) and select the appropriate COM port to use (for example, COM1).
Configure the port settings: Bits per second = 9600, Data bits = 8, Parity = None, Flow control = None
Power on the router by pressing the power button on the front panel. Verify that the POWER LED on the front panel turns green. The terminal emulation screen on your management device displays the router’s boot sequence.
When the following prompt appears, press the Spacebar to access the router’s bootstrap loader command prompt:

Hit [Enter] to boot immediately, or space bar for command prompt. Booting [kernel] in 9 seconds...

At the following prompt, enter boot -s to start up the system in single-user mode.

ok boot -s

At the following prompt, enter recovery to start the root password recovery procedure.

Enter full pathname of shell or 'recovery' for root password recovery or RETURN for /bin/sh: recovery

Enter configuration mode in the CLI.
Set the root password. For example:

user@host# set system root-authentication plain-text-password

At the following prompt, enter the new root password. For example:
